I met Dave about 20 years ago when he opened A Cut Above Pawn in Beaverton. From the first time I met with Dave I realized that he was an honest and dedicated member of the community. His passion for doing things the right and ethical way fell in line with how I handle things. From the beginning he pushed to better an industry he had just joined.
Since then he has always been a phone call away for me to ask about a business issue or just a life issue.
He became an active member of the Oregon Pawnbrokers Association (OPA) and worked tirelessly on the Board with my father Earl Oller, founder of the OPA to promote and defend the pawn industry. His integrity is second to none, and even as competitors in business he always looked out for my stores best interest, defending our business as if it was his own. We often worked in tandem helping our customers and industry partners alike.
As the current President of the OPA, I have relied on Dave’s experience to guide me through some legislative issues along with dealing with policies in areas of compliance and due process procedures. He has continued to be a strong voice for the OPA and has continued his passion for the promotion and defense of the Pawn industry.
Six years ago, I purchased a nationally recognized AML program. I filled out the online questionnaire and had a brief 30 min phone interview with the compliance officer, paid my money and had a manual delivered to the store with no further training. I had my compliance manual but still did not feel like I understood what I was supposed to do. When I asked the AML program owner if they would show up and help me answer any questions in the case of an audit, I was told “no” unless their program was called in to question. I was then told that if I had any other questions in the future I would be billed for their time.
About a year later Dave sat me down to ask my opinion on him starting a consulting company dealing in AML regulations. Excitedly I asked him not to just stop at the AML compliance but to tailor it to each store’s need, including things like state and local ordinances, kind of like a personalized playbook on running your store and dealing with the regulations.
In continuation with Dave’s desire to promote the importance of the Oregon Pawnbrokers Association, he offered his program at an extreme discount to any member in good standing with the OPA. His yearly fee is not just for the manual and a yearly audit, but it is more like a retainer for his services and advise for the entire year. Best money you could spend for your business. Just like paying to secure your store with your alarms, insurance and employees, by hiring Dave you can secure your business in the areas of compliance regulations. You will have yourself a true ally tapping his 20 years of pawnbroking experience and a vast network of resources, that will stand by your side whether you are dealing with federal compliance issues, local law enforcement, or just in need of an ear to bend for help running your business.
